Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
My sons and I love studying the Civil War. I’ve found it particularly moving in light of all the sesquicentennial celebrations to remember those who fought and died (at least in part) that others might be free. I’ve also been reminded of our human desire to dominate, enslave, oppress, and justify. Jesus came to break chains, not to bind us. If he has set you free, you are free indeed.
