See amid the winter’s snow,

Born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.

Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He who throned in height sublime
Sits amid the cherubim.

Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this.

Teach, O teach us, Holy Child,
By Thy Face so meek and mild,
Teach us to resemble Thee,
In Thy Sweet humility!

The Christmas holiday seems made for children. Its delights are best seen through the eyes of a child. Many of us grieve a little when the children in our lives grow too old to be swept up in the “magic” of Christmastime.

The celebration at the heart of Christmas was made for a child–a specific child, born 2000 years ago. As a child, Jesus is more approachable. The baby in the manger seems less threatening and radical than the man on the cross–or the empty tomb.

God knows us and recognized we would be drawn to this story–we have the birth accounts for a reason. The humility of God who became baby–putting himself in the power of humble caretakers–overwhelms me. May we indeed be taught to resemble Jesus in his humility–he, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking on the very nature of a servant. That is the nature Christ calls us to take–not the nature of an infant, but the nature of a servant.
