The alarm is sounding…

Nearly 10 years ago, our family moved from the St. Louis area to Indianapolis. (Did you know the word “Hoosier” is a derogatory term in good ol’ MO?) But that’s a completely different story…maybe for another time, another blog. Maybe.

So in the summer of 2003, we purchased a nice little two-story home that not only has a fire station directly behind us, but also a lovely tornado siren.

Yes, believe it or not, we knew it was there when we purchased the home. We were assured by our realtor and surrounding neighbors that after a little while you start to get used to it – you don’t really even notice.

Guess what? They were right.

It’s amazing what we can become accustomed to, isn’t it? My husband and I have recently been discussing the many ways in which we are influenced by our culture; and asking God to wake us up to unpleasing behaviors and attitudes that we remain completely unaware of.

Culture – every culture – is extremely powerful in shaping the thoughts, ideas, and beliefs of its people. We must fight to remain pure before God. There is a raging battle for our souls and it’s deadly serious.

Today, I was reminded of the reality of this battle. As I sat working on my laptop, in the comfort of my home at our kitchen table, that crazy tornado siren began to blare. Our Jack Russell Terrier (with the very unique name Jack) came dashing to the back door to sound his own alarm – barking, howling, and jumping at the sound of the siren outside.

When that warning sounds, Jack is fully aware; and he makes sure the rest of us know about it, too.              linda blog pic

So what about you? Are you paying attention to the blaring warnings that this world and the people in it are in grave danger? You see, there is much more than a tornado coming. Judgment is coming. People need to be warned. And they need the shelter, the refuge, the protection of Jesus. He’s the only one who can keep us safe from the coming storm.

I’m thankful that God used my little Jack Russell to remind me today that I’m in a battle. Judgment is coming. I need to be alert, purified in heart and mind, and sound the alarm to bring others to safety.

Sound the alarm in Jerusalem! Raise the battle cry on my holy mountain! Let everyone tremble in fear because the day of the LORD is upon us. – Joel 2:1
